What "organic bedding" actually means at Or & Zon

Most "organic" bedding labels mean nothing. We use two specific certifications: Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 tests every component for 100+ harmful substances, and our cotton comes from mills part of the Better Cotton Initiative™. Linen is 100% French flax. Cotton is long-staple — never blended with synthetics, never inflated with cheap multi-ply yarns. That's why our bedding feels premium without playing the thread-count game.

Where our bedding is made

Every Or & Zon piece is woven in a family-run mill in northern Portugal using traditional looms — not factory-style mass production. The mill specializes in linen and cotton bedding for the European market, with sustainable water and energy practices. Each item is dye-lot matched, so when you buy a bed set or matching pieces, the colors are perfectly consistent across all components.

Building your bedding setup — sheet set vs bed set vs individual pieces

If you're fully outfitting a bed, our bed sets bundle a duvet cover, fitted sheet, flat sheet and 2 pillowcases — saving roughly 15% vs buying separately, with all pieces dye-lot matched.

If you already have a duvet cover, our sheet sets include only the sheets (fitted + flat + 2 pillowcases).

If you're replacing one piece — like just a duvet cover or fitted sheet — every component is sold individually too.

Frequently asked questions about organic bedding

What is bedding?

Bedding is the layered set of textiles that cover a mattress: a fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcases, plus a duvet cover (or comforter) and sometimes a quilt. A complete bedding setup is typically 5 pieces — what we call a bed set.

How often should you wash your bedding?

Wash sheets and pillowcases every 1–2 weeks. Wash duvet covers every 2–4 weeks. Wash quilts and blankets monthly. Always wash on gentle cycle in cold water with mild detergent. Skip fabric softener — it coats fibers and reduces breathability.

How do I layer my bedding?

Bottom to top: fitted sheet → flat sheet (decorative side down so it shows when folded) → optional quilt or coverlet → duvet cover with insert. Add 2 sleeping pillows and 2 decorative shams at the head.

What's the difference between organic and regular cotton bedding?

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or GMO seeds. Regular cotton typically uses heavy chemicals during growing and processing — those residues stay in the finished fabric. Oeko-Tex® certification verifies the final fabric is free from 100+ harmful substances.

Are organic bedding and Oeko-Tex® the same thing?

No. "Organic" refers to how the fiber was grown. "Oeko-Tex® Standard 100" tests the final fabric for chemical residues. The strongest bedding has both — organic fiber and Oeko-Tex® certification, which is what we offer.

How long should organic bedding last?

Linen lasts decades and softens every year. Long-staple organic cotton (percale and sateen) lasts 5+ years with proper care. The trade-off: linen wears beautifully, cotton looks newer for longer before showing age.
